Neuropsychological and Psychological Evaluations and Consultation
Our experience enables us to offer effective outpatient, individualized, psychological and neuropsychological evaluations. We provide diagnostic and testing services for a variety of mental health conditions and cognitive deficits or dysfunctions.
Our focus is to help individuals and their treating physicians learn more about their difficulties in order to determine a potential course of treatment or rehabilitation. We achieve this by providing a safe and comfortable space in which to listen to your concerns (and the concerns of your loved ones), and customizing an evaluation of your overall cognitive or thinking abilities.
Our goal is to help you learn more about yourself in order to move forward in your life, and help your family and physicians gain greater understanding of any strengths and weaknesses you may have so they can assist you in future.
Neuropsychological evaluations involve a variety of tasks, including a review by the doctor of any pertinent medical records, behavioral observations over the course of the testing day(s), estimations of premorbid (or prior) functional capabilities (based on demographic characteristics and a comprehensive interview with the doctor), and administration of a battery of tests that look at different areas of functioning (e.g., effort and motivation, intellectual functioning, academic achievement, verbal and visual memory, speech and expressive language, receptive language and comprehension, visuoperceptual skills, visuoconstructive functioning, basic motor skills, executive functioning, reasoning, problem solving, judgment, and awareness). Psychological functioning can also be addressed individually or as a part of a more comprehensive neuropsychological testing battery. Psychological evaluations address issues related to mood (e.g., depression or anxiety), emotions, and personality characteristics.
Testing allows us to determine the neuropsychological sequelae associated with specific neurological disorders, such as Alzheimer’s disease (or other neurodegenerative processes), Parkinson’s disease, Huntington’s disease, Vascular dementia, neuromuscular diseases, and Multiple Sclerosis. Testing also allows us to examine neurocognitive changes following traumatic brain injury/concussion, stroke, and neurotoxin exposure. Testing can assist treating physicians in the differentiation of organic and psychiatric disorders, provide information regarding the potential impact of malingering (or issues related to effort and motivation), examine the impact of developmental disorders, help quantify the extent of functional impairment or disability, assist with return to work or school issues for someone having suffered a stroke or traumatic brain injury/concussion, and assist with the differential diagnosis (or distinguishing) between normal age-associated changes and mild cognitive impairment or the onset of a dementia.
